I just picked up this coin on ebay for $21.00.
It shows signs of some cleaning and some wear, but for the price I couldn't turn it down. It is an EDS of the 17 berry, the break is there but the berry has yet to form. Let me know what you think. it has the wort on the eagle's nose along with the broken r in trust. It also has the top of the G in God broken which I have not seen listed in the discription. Does anyone know if the broken G is on other examples of this variety?

Here are some pics.

I have checked out some coins on ebay, and I saw that the broken G is fairly common for this date. I should have done a little research before I posted.

Does anyone know a safe way to remove the white, dusty, film from coins like this?

NGiles,

I wouldn't try to remove it. I don't believe acetone will do anything to the white, dusty stuff. When I get the urge to "improve" a surface of a coin ... I take a time-out. I put the coin away and usually by the time it comes back out, I'm fine with it.

I have a hard time with leaving things alone. I should know better. More often than not I make things worse. This is probably a coin that I should leave alone. Thanks for the feedback.

Would the EDS of this variety be more, or less desirable to collectors?

If the available number of examples is relatively equal, the LDS (Late Die State) with a more obvious and dramatic break would be preferred. If there are 100 examples of an LDS available and only one of an EDS (Early Die State) ... the tables are turned.

p.s. - LDS and EDS defined for those not familiar with these terms.
