Kurt, I thought that might be the case, at least with the Gate guarding the moat crossing. Thanks for the confirmation. Dick EDIT: I assumed that would be the case, but the one that said....REG. D. F , or F.D.,Threw me for a loss.

Kurt, that old gate was VERY heavy! It took a good team of men, and or horses to lift it. It was designed to close immediately, in an emergency, such as an attacking force, to protect the Castle. Diock

The gate, known as a portcullis, is an old symbol of the British government, and used nowadays as a symbol of the British Parliament. It has featured on coinage since the "portcullis dollars" of Elizabeth I, issued in 1600.

Dick, that sounds like a good security feature! Far better than my house alarm system. I've seen these grates on many castles, but never knew the name--thanks Sap!

Thanks for the info! It is nice to know what one has in the hand! I would not want to be an intruder, there. I understand "portcullis' can be bad for your health! Note to staff: thanks for placing this topis in its' proper spot. I didn't know who they belonged to, so I asked.)-) Dick

The D.G. REG. F.D. stands for
"Dei Gratia Regina Fidei Defensor"
which is latin for
"By the grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith"
Defender of the faith refers to the British monarch's position as head of the Anglican church. (Henry VIII split with the catholic church and started the anglican church because the pope at the time would not give him a divorce) Funnily enough, before this, Henry VIII had had the title given to him by the previous pope for defending the Catholic faith against early protestantism.

They will all be changing soon as well, the news designs should be out in April, and I have seen what a london paper things the designs will be but I doubt they were like that. All very boring and royal, I think they will be something based on a theme, like flowers or something "british" (chavs maybe).
