Belgian Congo 1911, 20 centimes   and 10 centimes  The Belgian Parliament had voted that 'Congo Free State', which formerly was personal possession of the late King Leopold II, be transferred to the nation upon his death (1909). Hence Belgian rule in Congo only lasted little over half a century. |

1911 Morocco 1 rial; 0.900 silver; 37 mm; mintage= 10,100,000:   The bluish toning + the Arabic calligraphy makes this crown-size coin one of the prettiest pieces I own.

From Congo to Belgium with these 2 Francs and 1 Franc silver ooins. These coins often have a weak strike. They would have worn rapidly, had WW-I not driven them out of circulation. 2 Francs with legend in French   1 Frank with legend in Dutch  |

 Congrats on that Moroccan silver rial, mysilveryears. Last coin for 1911 is this 1000 Reis from Brazil.   Even during the 19th century, Brazil had a bad reputation of currency debasement. At independence in 1822, the large silver coin of 960 Reis was worth 8 spanish colonial reales (or $1). There are counterstamped colonial 8R coins, having served as 960 Reis in Brazil. From 1849 until 1900 a 1000 Reis coin weighed 12.75g of 0.900 silver, which in 1906 had been reduced to 10g of 0.900 fineness silver. Currency debasement accelerated later on: by 1939, 1000 Reis was a 23 mm coin in aluminum bronze. That currency was replaced by the cruzeiro in 1942. |
