Gwyde Pillar of the Community Belgium 506 Posts	Posted 05/28/2017 12:19 pm Belgian 5 Francs. 1876 was the last year these large silver coins (37 mm) were minted for circulation. After the mid 1870's the silver price started sliding relative to gold. This meant the end of the dual precious metal standard in favor of the gold standard. Several countries stopped minting large crown sized silvers around that time or restricted it to commemoratives. In all counties applying the gold standard silver coins in circulation became in fact fiat currency: the value of their metal content was significantly lower than their face value.
