We are moving towards the 17th century rather smoothly this time.

With any luck, this thread should make it to 1503 before running into any delays.

It's even more awesome in hand, folks. It has a luscious chocolate colored original patina. But if my arthritis gets too much worse I will not be able to lift the durn thing.
I wish I too had a good answer as to how these circulated, if indeed they did as mine appears well handled. And only after viewing some of that info Dorado linked to, do I realize what a great deal this one was. Most of the examples on the market seem to be sea salvaged; usually highly corroded and sometimes having pieces missing.
I suspect, without a shread of proof, that this 'plate' piece came over on an early settlement ship and has been passed down through generations until it finally ended up in an estate sale. There were three other early Swedish coins sold with this one as a separate lot. I live within hiking distance (if your legs are good) of Old Swede's Church.
I hope jbuck will forgive me & not scold me too badly for posting these pics now, weeks late.
The other two will come up when we reach the 1600's & 1500's. Worth the wait :3

I know that 1717 day was yesterday, but I really wanted to post this coin and was too busy to realize that the day had passed.

This piece was one of my best bargain bin finds ever. Not that you'd think that from a glance...



Great Britain, George I, small flan "dump" farthing, 1717.
I estimate the grade as PO-1.

KM 548, $140 in VG-8 (lowest listed grade). Numista 13080, rarity 89. Coinquest 16762, $100 in "worn".
Clayton's "Coins of the UK" lists the date as £200 in Fine (which this is admittedly nowhere near).
Supposedly Spink 3661; I don't have a copy.


Fun fact: after photographing this coin (and several others), on June 13, 2017, I immediately sent the photos to my email address, because I didn't want to bother with copying them from my smartphone directly.

Then I forgot about those photos until the email arrived - which it did on October 5, some 114 days later.

Here is a 3 kreuzer from Bohemian Austria dated 1716 AD. Some day, I should probably give this silver coin an acetone bath to remove the laquer applied to by a former owner.
