In 1928, we're near the dawn of the Irish republic. Minting first got beyond pattern tests. Here's a Reul (6d) and beneath Leat Coroin (a half crown). Contrary to the UK, sixpence coins were nickel but the fineness of the silver half crown is higher (0.750). Until 1937 the legend on the obverse reads: SAORSTAT eIREANN or Irish Free State. After 1937 it was simplified to 'Eire'.    |

1928 Switzerland 2 francs; 27.5 mm; 0.835 silver; mintage= 750 thousand. Except for metal content, this long running design remains essentially unchanged since the 1800's. This is a coin frequently found in 'junk' silver bins. Many dates have mintages under 1 million. Imagine finding a similar U.S. coin for melt price. Hah!

1928 Guatemala 10 centavos; 20 mm; 0.720 silver; mintage= 500 thousand. I love these low mintage junk box finds, especially if they have legendary birds on them. For most birdwatchers, seeing a quetzal in the wild would be a 'bucket list' experience.

Great Britain 1927 Wreath Crown:  15,030 of these crowns were minted, of which 15,000 were in Proof Sets - the others were individual proof coins. 1927 is the year that British coins adopted the new reverse designs by Kruger Gray and the modified portrait (trialled on the halfpenny in 1925 and on other denominations in 1926) was finally adopted for the obverse, ending the problems of 'ghosting' that had plagued the 1911-26 coins. All the new silver coins were issued in the proof set, but only the shilling with the new design was struck for circulation. Threepences and florins dated 1927 only exist as proofs from the set; halfcrowns and sixpences dated 1927 were struck for circulation but with the 1911-26 reverses. Edited by NumisRob
