Is it common for 1981 Quarters to have the "LIBERTY" & Date riding the rim? Other years seem to have a small gap. Thanks.

It can be caused by different reasons, some good and some bad. Only way to tell is a pic.

I think the die that struck your coin had some wear on it, and might have been slightly misaligned too.

Nothing wrong with keeping a couple if you like them. After all, they only cost you a quarter.

As for value - no - just a quarter and probably will always be a quarter.

When you get a misaligned die causing the devices to at least partially fall off the edge interest increases. Interest increases value.
