Sometimes you see something and it boggles the mind. Is Stack's the tail that wags the dog? This is the kind of stuff that makes the pit of your stomach hollow when you think about how this undermines the TPG's credibility. I feel for everyone who ever got a details designation from NGC or had their coin returned in a bodybag.

No doubt! I've had a couple come back from NGC that could have easily come back straight....Went to another TPG, large customers sure get the nod.....IMHO

From what I've seen of it, the W 57th St collection coins are almost universally ugly and over-graded pieces. This coin is no exception.

The X that appears at the center of the bust is a toning mark, not a scrape or graffiti. If you look closely you can see that the color follows the path of the design elements without actually "digging" in to the coin. Looks a lot like a pencil, too.

So this is most certainly ugly, as a large percentage of the Stacks coins were, but toning, even ugly toning, isn't going to get you a details grade.

This will not details from any TPG. Its got ugly toning from maybe a rubber band or something, but it I graded correctly.

I think that the sharpness grade is reasonable, perhaps a step high; attribution is correct. I do not see obvious signs of metal displacement so I agree that these are toning marks. It is not an attractive coin, as most have already noted, and would likely sell at the bottom end of its price range.

Maybe just staining; details nevertheless.

A potential buyer will see it anyway, and adjust the value.

Right. Maybe it's just me, but I think this coin offers some sort of disservice to common sense.

If the coin has stained, due to a rubber band or other any such object coming into contact with the coin, by NGC's own Details Grading Guidelines, this coin should have received a details designation and marked "Obverse Stained."

This is the hard truth, and unfortunate, when it comes to TPG's.

That being said, since you can't control the TPGs' occasional bad behavior, your best recourse is to not reward it by spending your money on such coins; as long as people buy junk, there is no pressure for the TPGs to quit slabbing junk.

When a big player sends in thousands of coins for grading a lot of things get overlooked.

Just like in any business your best customers will get some special treatment.

No difference with TPG'ers.

And if you think the graders in the grading room have no idea whose coins are being graded ... really?

Tough to miss who's coins you are grading when the label going into the holder says Stack's and has a picture of their storefront.
