I don't mind dark toning, especially on older circulated coins as it gives a touch of character. However, when it is pitch black, the details of the coin are very obscured.

Quote:Mike's Seated dollar coin looks more like the 'Twilight' knight compared to this one with its nearly uniform end-stage dark toning on both sides. My kitchen-tabletop photography does not do justice to the subtle color shifts on the reverse. Coin has held its honored place in my Dansco 7070 album for several years now. It is a very difficult and expensive type to upgrade. I accidently bid on a cleaned coin like yours and unfortunately won it during the fun show. https://coins.ha.com/itm/seated-dol...251-10028.s#

I like the grunge on this coin. You see a lot of these out there, but the toning makes this one unique. Of course I have a couple of blast white ones of this variety that I paid twice as much for.

In hand, it does not have the orange overtones. Its mostly a deep lustrous gray. I bought it in the holder. Its graded MS-64, but I got it for well below 64 money, as most people will avoid deeply toned Walkers, preferring blast white.

As has been stated - it all depends on eye appeal and personal preference.

I agree with previous posters, it all comes down to eye appeal but it's also a matter of personal preference. As to value, while there are many collectors who would not buy a darkly toned coin, as long as there is some colouring and the coin is not just black, there is usually enough demand to maintain the coin's value.

I have a really darkly toned Canberra Florin that was stored with some old reels of movie films for decades that I was about to image and the blasted battery on my camera went flat. I will post images when I have finished charging the battery
