I won this Hadrian today on ebay. The reverse legend is COS and the bust marks it as struck in 117 AD, shortly after Hadrian ascended to the throne.

I'm an avid collector of Hadrian denarii and like these "young" bust coins. I look forward to receiving this one.

Thanks for a forum where I can share it with others!

Echizento,

It looks like good silver under the dirt. I'll decide once I get it whether to leave it or give it a lemon juice soak. It should clean up pretty easily.

This one is going in my collection. I have two other COS denarii of Hadrian.

Nice coin Paul Bulgerin

If you do decide to clean the coin with lemon juice could you post a photo...I'd love to see the finished product.

Yes, if I decide to clean it I'll certainly post a photo. Thanks for asking.

I received the coin this week.

I really like the silver highlights over the black patina, so I think I'm going to leave it as is.

Most ancient coins need cleaning after recovery from burial.
This coin has already been through that process.

I wouldn't attempt to clean it any further.
The contrasting patina on this coin has helped to bring up the design details quite nicely.
