Only started seriously with world coins last year. I've been using coinworldgallery.com, Don's Coin World's site for IDing most coins I have. (Don, if your a member here...HI) His covers most all very well with links for values/sales and all pertinent info. Only problem I've found is that on some countries his dating doesn't go far enough back. ie. just had to ask @ IDing 1815 Nova Scotia Half Penny, his dating stops at 1840, also the older German States 1700's and Notgeld. I've seen mentioned here the Krause book, does tis cover the examples above? May have to invest in it soon.

I have three Krause books(CDs actually): 1701-1800, 1801-1900, and 1901-2000. FYI - my Krause doesn't list a 1815 Nova Scotia Half Penny

I got the 20th Century Krause recently and it is very thorough. Like Fuzzy said, they have editions for the timeframes you mentioned and the CD is a useful feature because the books are quite large and the pages seem to be easy to tear.

I have all four Kause books: 1601 to 2000. My interest stops in the 1960's, when exclusive circulation of base metal coinages around the World take over. There are quite a few internet sites and many general books, to help you identify any coin, right back to the beginning of coinage, 26 centuries ago. I have trouble with Islamic coins, and coins of the Indian Sub Continent. Quite often, a simple Google Images search can be of a very great help with coin identification. If you don't have the books, G.I. is a great place to start. However, you won't do any better than posting a picture here in the CCF, and asking for help.

I usually tend to go with Numista, personally. They don't have much of the more exotic stuff (and identifying coins from Arabic countries with them is a bit complicated), but they do have an awful lot of older coins (even the pre-1600 coins that wouldn't be in Krause), and they're a lot more complete regarding tokens and the like that wouldn't usually be in Krause either. Of course, as far as I can tell, you have already linked to Numista, so you probably know about it anyway That said, if you have any 15th or 16th century (or very early 17th century) German States coins, it might be worth it to check out the Saurma site (they have a nice identification page, and show a lot of coin types that appear neither in Krause nor on Numista). They don't really have anything after 1620, however (but those coins are more likely to be in Krause, anyway).

I have the 4 Krause books. All the sources given though are good and would suit you well. Just depends on your preferred style of research.

Thank you all for all the info. John1: the website I mentioned links to NGC's, its the one I've been using, hence original question of additional sources for listings early than they have. January1May: the Numista links are from CCFer's replies, will check them out. Also will check out the Saurma site, that seems to be the date range looking for, thanks! Looks like I just gave myself MORE to do.....

Quote: I have all four Krause books: 1601 to 2000. For the collector of coins from the German States, there is a catalog by Krause that covers 1501 to 1600 AD also. Earlier than that, and you are generally stuck with more specialized books (or similarly specialized on-line resources).
