I also have almost no experience in plating issues. I truly think this is some kind'of heat damage PSD. But here it is.Thanks for looking!

Looks like a heated copper coin that altered the surface. (possible cigarette lighter issue)

with the heat.

The bubbling on the cheek makes me wonder if is a zinc 82, would think more heat needed to bubble a copper alloy, but then again, a lighter is what @ 1600 degrees? If it was a cigarette tip, that cheek stuff would be external? Just my WAG's.

A weight should confirm that you have a copper alloy cent, not a Zincoln, so plating would not be involved. It appears to just be a stain.
