Could this even be possible? I'm leaning towards a well placed die chip/crack. But it does look like a D. Thanks for looking!

Is it raised? I see a lot of die chip in the date and liberty on the Wheaties, but there are some on the new coins as well. Also, what is the mark to the left of L in Liberty, just a scratch?

Dropped letters are possible when grease with debris falls out of the die and gets struck, but they are incuse on the coin.

Dropped letters are incuse. This is raised, so it is a die chip. The mint mark is part of the design after 1990 cents. So it couldn't be a miss placed mint mark.
