Hello everyone,

I have a question about this coin showing some spotting (For lack of a better term I used "spotting", what is the actual name for it?) on the Obverse and Reverse of the coin even though it was graded as MS70 by PCGS.

Is this something that maybe could have occurred after it was slabbed or before? I thought for a coin to receive a grade of 70, then there shouldn't be any distraction, but this clearly has some distractions.

I heard that coloring of the coin does not affect the grading as being MS as long as no signs of wear is seen, but to have spots on the coin and still grade 70 makes me think that this occurred after it was slabbed. Or am I wrong?

You are absolutely correct. There was a period of time that lasted until 2011 where spotting and toning was a problem.

Although this doesn't technology change the grade, it most certainly changes the value. There is a majority of ASE collectors that don't buy and won't accept these problem coins.

Most who do buy these are bargain seekers wanting to shave a few bucks off the average selling price.

I bought this coin in ebay and although the pictures were not the greatest, I trusted that the coin would be in perfect condition since it was slabbed with a grade of MS70. My $45 did not get me a coin that I am 100% pleased with.

Just to confirm, the spotting will not get any worse right?

It's probably toned as much as it will, judging from the area, amount, and type of tone. I doubt you'll see much worse on this one. $45-47 is the "usual" price for this in MS-70 with no problems.

I guess if it were me, and I had the opportunity, I'd return it.

Gonna be hard to sell a 70 in that condition. I returned 69's with just a few water spots on them.

Not one I would buy at 70 price.

Thanks to all that replied. While I do agree with your comments and at first that I felt like returning it, but I kind of like it. It grew in me so I am gonna keep it to remind me to check the coin better even it is graded at 70 when buying it online. Lesson learned.

Also, coin keeping is about whether I like the coin or not right? Eventhough most would disagree and not pay the price for a MS70 in this state.
