Two useful formulas for practic: Object space resolution = sensor pixel size (um)/primary magnification (PMmag) PMag = sensor size(mm)/FOV(mm) (field of view)
Lets say lens have much more resolution power than sensor and is not limited factor. 3.71/10=0.37um - minimum detail of real subject can be resolve with x10 objective on Canon T6 sensor 1.4/4=0.35um - minimum detail of real subject with only x4 lens with IMX179 sensor.
So we can see the same level of detail of subject with x10 with sensor @3.71um as with x4 @1.4mkm.

justwalking very nice work. I see you know this stuff very well. but if you try to load to large of a image. say it does not upload because of size. Oops... 300.27Kb won't show on the board I tryed to put less size .jpg but it won't also Don't know why, sorry all you have to do is rename your photo. I just right clip on the photo hit rename. all I do is add a A or B to the letters that are already there. that will allow you to up load your photo. it works for myself

pepactonius...your 100% crop looks really sharp. I need to get my 10x Mitutoyo out and see if it shows such sharpness on my sensor. I don't remember seeing good sharpness at 100% regardless of optics, ie the camera itself was limiting. Maybe time for a new camera...
This makes me want to start a thread where we share 100% crops across our various cameras using similar subjects and optics. I'm really curious about the differences in image quality due to camera itself. I generally donwsize 2x as a minimum to eliminate the camera-induced aberrations, but your crop looks good enough to not have to do this. What settings are you using in the camera? I'm mostly interested in picture style and its sub-settings for sharpness, contrast, saturation.

Quote: What settings are you using in the camera? I'm mostly interested in picture style and its sub-settings for sharpness, contrast, saturation. I just use the default settings in the camera, except for auto white balance. In this case, the white balance was probably left at whatever the last ordinary full-coin shot was using. I shoot raw, so it's not clear what affect the settings would really have on the shot. I use Canon Digital Photo Professional to convert these to TIFF files. Again, I'm just using default settings for the conversion. For this photo, Zerene stacker DMAP mode was used to stack the TIFFs, again with default settings. Zerene Stacker seems to do some kind of sharpening, since full coin shots sometimes look funny after the combine. When I reduce the shots for uploading (not applicable to 100% crops like this), I use GIMP Sinc/Lanczos reduction (without trying to reduce by some exact integer factor). The Sinc/Lanczos resampling seems to have some sort of built-in sharpening, so you don't have to do any manual sharpening after the reduction. GIMP output JPEG quality is usually around 75 (whatever that means). -------------------------------- For pixel-peeping with the Mitutoyo 10X, here's a 1600% crop of the 9-3 group (645 lines/mm) from a USAF test chart, using white Jansjo light: This image is actually a stack using 1 or 2 micron step size, where I let Zerene Stacker DMap mode select the sharpest exposure, instead of doing it manually. Here's a shot where the image from the Mitutoyo 10X is magnified by a 2x Canon teleconverter. This is an 800% crop of the same USAF test chart, which hints at what kind of resolution you'd get with smaller (1.8-1.9 micron) pixels: This was made using Zerene Stacker PMAX mode rather than DMAP.

sony a7r markII 10x objective mounted on a macro lens. I will post the original along with the crop photo. I have learned some thing new today. my setup has way to much vibration. it really shows when you try to focus or move anything. this is a single photo no stacking.

Quote: my setup has way to much vibration I guess there's always flash, but continuous illumination is so convenient. I've never tried flash at all, at least not since the days of film and real flashbulbs. It would be interesting to see what your setup looks like with the 10x objective, so we can see how solid it looks.

macro lens set at infinity. the aperture set at F2.5. this lens is sharp. but will have to use focus stacking. nice working height from the coin making it very easy to light. I am liking this mitutoyo 10X objective.

one thing I have tried. I attached the 10x mitutoyo to the rodenstock lens. I stoped the apecture down as far as it would go. I had almost enough DOF. that one might not need to use focus stacking. keep trying different ways. any thoughts.
