any thoughts.

Looks like the highest? part of the coin is not in focus. Usually, I make sure there are many extra shots focused above and below what's really needed. For the 10x, if 50 exposures with 5 micron step size is just enough to cover everything, I probably take 75 shots, with a dozen or so extra at each end. I think Zerene Stacker will ignore the unnecessary ones.

What is the focal length of your Rodenstock APO tube lens? For APS-C, a 200mm lens works well, and gives 10X. For full frame, I don't know how sharp the 10X Mitutoyo would be at the corners with a 200mm tube lens.

pepactonius I took the mitutoyo off the rodenstock. I have it on a relay lens setup now. you are right I did not start high enough. the DOF on this lens is as thin as paper. I will do one later with the rodenstock. I find with the rodenstock the magnification is less. but it works great. here is a image of the set up.

Hi. Let me show my attempt whithout stacking on my very cheep system.
Just 4X finite no-name microscope objective and no more other optics, even eyepice and camera.
It's a part of small coin about 18mm diameter

Justwalking...is this the microscope objective you use or something similar? Do you have a link on ebay for the one you use on your cheap setup?

On ebay it looks exactly as here
http://www.ebay.com/itm/252425490918 (but twice expensive).

Nice results from this stack -- it looks like you got the closest details in sharp focus this time. Is this a full-frame shot or a crop? With the XXXmm APO Rodagon N?, do you get the best results by stopping down to f/5.6?

BTW, the camera attached almost looks like a Canon rather than the Sony A7R Mark II.

pepactonius yes I used the canon camera. it makes it a whole lot more easier tethered. I am going to post another coin. this is a 1968 Canadian nickel dollar with flat field doubling. I am using a nikon el-nikkor 80mm f5.6 for my tube lens.

Looks good. The Mitutoyo seems to perform pretty well with a non-standard tube lens. I guess the valid operating range for 0.28 NA is reasonably wide.

Corners are getting weak but the center is still very sharp. This is basically validation that what matters most is the objective, not the tube lens.

today I found 2 items. that I had been looking for quite sometime. first very sturdy solid hardwood table 30 inches by 30 inches. second I met this very nice gentleman. I told him I am looking for a piece of granite. it measures 34 inches by 36 inches. it is 1 inch and a half thick. dont even ask the weight. he gave me such a deal I could not believe what he sold me the granite slab for. so finally my camera is level in all direction. thanks to ray for the tip about using a mirror. to center your camera. I also understand why ray likes us to use a straight mount versus angled on enlarger stands. because the camera causes more cantilever weight on the mount itself. here is a image of my final setup.

I have my power supply max 12V DC with a max 5 Amps. I mounted one of the angel eye 80mm ring light to a macro lens. I wanted to test the light on a pristine coin. This coin is made of pure silver. It is in cased in plastic. here is the results. Just waiting for a 40 mm angel eye ring light. To mount it directly on to the mitutoyo objective. This coin was lite directly by the angle eye ring light. The scratches is on the plastic holder.

sony camera a 100mm macro lens. 2 lights on this slabbed coin both 60 watt daylight. this macro lens shows. that the surface of this coin has a matte finish. I left this lens wide open at F 2.8.
