Is there an inexpensive computer software that will allow me to overlay scanned images of coins for determining die differences?

Paint.net (name of software) is a free (that's inexpensive) program that will allow you to put images in separate layers, then change the opaqueness of the top layer.

The website is getpaint.net

I second the nomination for paint.net. It is the only thing I use.

I know you were asking about computer software but, if anyone is interested in an overlay Android app, I have Photoblend and it's very easy to create images like this:

spruett... that's pretty nifty. I've an Android phone. Although a different purpose I'll check it out. A guy cant have too much technology that he can't figure out how to work.

Darn. I'm a dinosaur with Vista. Paint.net needs me to join the 21st century.

I just saw this thread or I would have weighed-in earlier...

For use in print medium, you have no choice but to do a single-image overlay, but for online use you can do an animation. Animated overlays are IMO much more effective than single-image types, and require only limited local resources. You need to be able to flip one of the images and do an effective alignment between the two. You can do this manually by cropping so that the obverse/reverse images line up properly. Then upload the obverse and reverse images to one of the online animated gif makers, and create the animated overlay.

I can no longer link from Photobucket so you will need to look at my website to view these: http://www.macrocoins.com/overlays.html
