I have just acquired a Fugio Cent!
Cue the dancing banana!

Barring an unexpected financial windfall, it will probably be my only one, so I'm not currently planning to buy a book on the subject.

I got it from a dealer I trust. He attributed it as a Newman-9Q and I believe it, but I want to educate myself. Does anyone have the written description of the diagnostics that differentiate a 9Q from other varieties?

I've found some web sources with pictures of the many varieties, and mine looks like a 9Q, but I'm not sure what features I should be looking for. Anybody have a book on the subject?

I know "we want pics" and someday I hope to be able to produce a picture that is more than a "round brown thing," but I'm tragically inept in this department. Someday, someday!

Arthrene, Fugio cents were "the first coins issued by authority of the United States." They are large cents, dated 1787. On the obverse are the legends 'Fugio' ("time flies") and 'Mind Your Business.' On the reverse, the legends 'United States' and 'We Are One.' The legends are credited to Benjamin Franklin, so the Fugio Cent is sometimes called the Franklin Cent.

These pre-date the Philadelphia Mint, produced in New York, New York and New Haven, Connecticut. It is thought that much of the copper used to make these cents came from the copper bands on the powder kegs sent to America by the French during the American Revolution.

I guess I'm not too proud to bump this one time.

Hoping a CCF member has one of the Fugio attribution books.

Nope, I do not have the reference book for Fugios. However, the author of that book, Eric Newman, is a St. Louis resident and I work next to a building named for him- does that count?

You could send an email to Conder101, I believe that he is an EAC(Early American Copper) member and he might have the book.

Eaglefoot,
The Fugio should be in the Blue Book (as well as the Red Book). It's in the 'Federal Issues / Contract Issues and Patterns' just before 'Half Cents.'

Daviscfad,
That is a great looking Fugio! (and a great picture)
Mine is considerably more worn. Someday I'll figure out how to take a usable photo.
