I've always been interested in coins since I was a kid. My mom bought me a globe piggy bank from Germany where I was born and tossed in a few German coins. Since then I have always threw in coins I thought were cool, bi-centennial, and foreign.
Not necessarily a collector, but I find them fascinating.
The beauty of being a Numismatist is you can be interested in coins without being a massive collector. Find something that interests you and dig in a bit. Maybe you purchase a few pieces along the way and maybe it's purely academic!
Look into OFEC - One From Every Country - especially if you set some dates of interest to you, the goal is to collect just one coin from each country that issued coins during that span.
