To commemorate the 50th year of making Krugerrands (1987 - 2017) South Africa will make 1/50 ounce Krugerrands.

They will be 8 mm in diameter and weigh .679 grams with .622 grams of pure gold (they are 22 karat gold).

They will be very small.

If you have a Lincoln Cent you can look at right now, get it, then look at the photo below.

They are also going to be producing a 1/20 version as well.

Also something to note is there are some small changes with the details for these new coins.
Can be seen with regards details of his beard on the obverse and with the springbok horns on the reverse.

Other than opening ownership of a real Krugger to people with a tighter budget, why would they do this? Any idea on the cost? If my math is right, that's about $25 with today's spot of $1204. What would you guess the premium is going to be? It would take about 5 of these to get the mass of a US Baby Eagle (1/10) and they have an $11 premium (Greysheet).

-edit: reminds me of a Christmas gift that my wife got from her Mom. My wife studied in Vienna for a semester in college. The gift was a small gold coin I thought was an Austrian 1915 4 florin 10 franc. Turned out to be a restrike. Anyway, my mother-in-law got it from some Austrian business men as a hostess gift back in the 70's; it's in a bezel. Gold was a lot cheaper back then & I bet this guy had multiples of these for just such occasions. It's about dime size (~18mm) so makes a nice little pendent. At 8mm I'm not sure if this little guy would even make decent jewelry.

You got me there, nss-52!

I suppose if you put a stud on one side it could work in a piercing of a nose, tongue, or whatever, too.

It's the same diameter as the UK 1/40th Britannia gold coin, but lighter:

The 40th oz Britannia gold contains about £25 gold, but sell for £70 from The Royal Mint.

The 50th oz Krugerrand contains about £20, but sell for £50 on ebay.
