So I've been trying to get my nephews interested in coin collecting by giving them circulated common date Mercury dimes, and Walking Liberty halves for their B-days and holidays. Problem is I'm running out of them. I'm looking at buying these in bulk-say 20-50 coins at a time. Perhaps with some barbers. Any recommendations? Edited by MikeF 01/20/2017 07:04 am

Go to the Monarch Precious Metals website for some decent prices on that kind of stuff. They have some very competitive pricing on what you are looking for.

I too am trying to slowly build a small collection for my nephew. Granted he is 6 but he knows his uncle Sean loves coins and he likes looking at them. If your looking for bulk maybe try an ebay lot or see if a local coin dealer will hook you up, it's not like your looking for rare coins just circulated silver to give to your nephews.

I have a jewelry store back in my home town, that buys and sells silver & gold, and he always has an abundance of silver bullion, but that's where I'd start. There's a silver and gold buyer near me, and I'll occasionally see him advertising on CL that he's selling halves & silver dollars. Go in and get to know one of your local silver & gold buyers, they're more interested in melt than numismatic values.

I'm so used to buying off the internet that I didn't even consider a local source.

Look local.. I had a local store (he retired) that would allow customers pick through his bags of junk silver.. 13-15x face value at the time. The other local stores were basically same price, but they wouldn't let you cherry pick. I've heard people say provident metals is a good only source for 90%

Don't know if you'd be as lucky, but over here in the P.A area, people were selling walkers, barbers, washingtons, all at barely above spot.

Agree with what others say about local shops. I am blessed to have an LCS near me that I can buy "junk" US silver for spot price (granted they are worn, damaged, or cleaned)but also can get some really nice foreign silver at spot as well.

Consider bringing your nephew to a local coin shop and have him pick some he likes directly from a dealers junk silver stash. My local coin dealers will always sell at bottom price direct to my nephew!

My dealer will sell a bag of 100 silver dimes for about spot. Rosies, Mercs, and Barbers mixed.

Same at our LCS, and ditto for quarters with SLQ slicks if you want them.

Ive been to a few here in NY and a couple in NJ, I find that the more isolated the LCS, the better the selection... Here at my LCS I can get washingtons and some worn SLQ's, and for dimes I get roosies and a few mercs, for halves it's mostly kennedy and franklins... The one in NJ tho, I can easily pick a roll of barber or merc dimes, or a roll of slq n Barber quarters (altho there are never that many), and Walker halves are plentiful

This requires a guess about where silver prices will be in the future? Since super low interest rates destroyed the market for "savers" God only knows where you can put money and get a decent return without serious risk? It is a risk/return dilemma. I can buy junk bonds that probably will not default and get 5% interest, but there is a risk, and you can't ignore it. If you do buy serious amounts of junk silver where will you store it? I already have large safe deposit box that costs me $300 a year and it is half full of just sets and slabbed coins. I have to admit that stacking silver appeals to me because I did miss the big bull market and I could have made some serious money if I had kept stacking just Sterling which I bought at spot. If you stack your silver in a home safe you better sure hide it and never tell a soul.
