It looks like someone put their initials on it but I have never seen this before. Has anyone seen this done to a Two Cent Piece of this time?

Welcome to the CCF, Jon ....

Your "love token" has what appears to be the ornately engraved initials L-I-W or some combination of those letters. The coin's reverse was planed-off, prior to an engraver's doing the job. Many love tokens were used as jewelry, but yours may well have been someone's pocket-piece. It's somewhat unusual to see a Two Cent Piece used as a love token, but all manner of coins were utilized as such; and particularly so, in the later half of the nineteenth century. My guess as to worth would be in the $15-$25 range, as this denomination was uncommonly used.

Some years ago, I met a dealer who was assembling a type set of U.S. coins. He needed a Twenty Cent Piece to complete his set. To his surprise, I had one and sent it to him.

If you do an ebay or google search for "love token" and "coin" using quotation marks, you'll find all manner of hits and info. There are many exonumists who collect these.
