cwb Pillar of the Community United States 3463 Posts	Posted 01/25/2017 1:30 pm I see this quite often on the Zinc cents, sometimes it covers most of the devices, not just the mint mark. I'm not sure what causes it, but I think it is due to the Zinc deteriorating beneath the Copper plating, which allows the plating to collapse leaving a flattened out part of the design.
