This is more of a reminiscing post. I never thought the price was ever going to go under $100.00 in my lifetime but I guess it was a passing fad. I remember being told they were going up in price due them being cracked out for submissions and also to be placed in albums. Hard to believe they were selling for over $350.00. Is this a buying opportunity? Well, you never know. Perhaps they'll go down in price even more! Here was a thread about it back in 2006. I should have sold my 2 sets back then!

Interesting read . . You just can't predict these things sometimes. It's not always an exact science when it comes to collecting. So many factors can come into play.

I remember when it was all the rage to scoop up the Bicentennial sets for future profit. Forty one years later, I'm still waiting to cash in!

That was a trend to get the public interested, and once the fad ends by the year 2008.

Everyone that bought in has a complete set, then is time to cash in, but there's too many of them and the demand isn't there anymore.

Two months ago one sold at my local club auction for $50. (I almost managed to get it for $30.)

That was an interesting read.
That was about the time I started a siesta from collecting coins for quite a few years.

They are still way too pricey IMHO. I bought the 2000 Silver proof set for less than $30 including shipping. The cheapest I can get the 1999 set for is $75, or $60 for just the Quarters! Heck I got the 2009 set for ~$50 and it has 4 lenses because it has the 6 Territory Quarters, 4 Presidential dollars and 4 Lincoln Cents. In fact I have all the sets from 2000-2009. It makes no sense the 99 set is so pricey!

I'm hoping the price continues to drop for a while. A guy locally was spinning a yarn about a collector here in VA that is hoarding these sets in an attempt to dump them on the market when the price spikes again. Pretty silly if you ask me.

I'm also interested in getting an '82 & '83 uncirculated mint set (yes I know they don't officially exist) but there are "souvenir" sets that are pretty much the same thing but they are ~$100 per year! Outrageous, But if you have every other year they've got you by the balls so what are you gonna do? -sigh-
