It's a counterstamp. Someone pounded that into the coin after it left the mint.

Afraid that doesn't equal any additional value and it destroys the slight collector value it might have had. Spend it.

This Nickel is called a Jefferson nickel . It is counter stamped and not worth more than 20 cents , unless a collector of C S coins wants it .
