The gouge across the face/eyes would bodybag a more recent issue but bust coinage is different. AU55.

Good looking coin and love the toning. The 1836 is known for the die cracks but I think the scratch across the face is bad enough to warrant a details grade in this case (even for bust coinage).
AU details.

Beautiful coin unfortunately that scratch keeps it to AU details for me. Looks like someone pocket knifed it long ago.

Given that it's NGC I'd say AU-55. The coin might get a "details grade" at PCGS because of the obverse scratch. The coin has an interesting combination of the die breaks and scratches. It's one coin clinic on learning how to tell the difference.

AU55 details. they will apply that designation as the 'X' is deliberate damage to the coin.

Here it is. I guess the grader overlooked the scratch, like I did when I first saw it.
