Hello all,

I've attached a 1964 Lincoln Penny that stood out to me.

I'm wondering if this could be a highly circulated SMS?

Any info regarding the 1964-1967 SMS variety would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Gula

I gotta ask for the non-Lincoln Cent specialists.
What is an SMS?

Gula, it is unlikely you have an SMS 1964 cent, as there were only a few sets minted that year. PCGS has only graded 22 1964 SMS cents, and the speculation is that the population is even lower, with coins cracked out and resubmitted. Source: http://www.PCGS.com/News/1964-Speci...nt-Set-Coins

Dennman, SMS is not cent specific, but stands for Special Mint Set. From 1965-1967, the mint produced no proof sets, issuing these special mint sets instead.

This page touches on the 1964 SMS Lincoln Cent: http://www.lincolncentsonline.com/r...rieties.html
It has photos of one example and also shows reverse die markers to look for on your coin.

I don't think the SMS would be worth much anyways in this condition. This one looks like it spent some time in something that caused discoloration

CoinCollector, there were probably fewer than fifty of the SMS cents minted. PCGS has a MS60 RB listed for $1250 in their price guide, so it would probably be worth at least a few hundred bucks in this condition if it was an SMS strike.
