I was going through the local online auctions of Roman coins and among the 30+ pages of (almost exclusively) dross, I found this: What on earth is this supposed to be? (and yes, sorry for the non-specific title, I'm not sure how to call this thing)

Barbarian copy of a denarius of Pius, Aurelius, Verus, or (maybe) Commodus?
The art style is acceptable, but the lettering is gibberish!
IVIPIX(...)ISVIVPIIVX
Any chance of telling if it's silver or a fourree?

Interesting piece !
What is the diameter and weight ? I held my iPhone in front of a mirror to see if it made more sense with the image reversed. Some of the letters look more sensible reversed I can read XVII which reads a little better. The reverse (in reverse) reminded me of some of the Balkan city issues. The die may have been made by hubbing a bronze provincial coin and then an illiterate die cutter tried to make something that looked like titles to surround it.
Very interesting coin Probably one of a kind too !

The reverse legend runs counter-clockwise, facing outward. That was the norm during the first century AD, but fell out of favor either in the late reign of Domitian, or else Nerva.
Whoever made this coin was copying two different denarii from at least 50 years apart.
It's a really cool piece for sure!

It's a really cool piece for sure! No kidding. I usually don't go for these but this one is truly fascinating.

I can't say much more about it, other than providing the data that were given in the listing. According to the seller, the dimensions were: 2,75 g / 20 mm.
It sold for ~$28.50.
