I'm a recently retired public school teacher. Back in the 80's I assembled, what I thought, was a pretty nice collection of
Morgan dollars. Round about 1989 I quit my non-teaching corporate job to go back to school and get my teaching credential, so I sold all my dollars to help finance the year I would be without income.
Fast forward 26+ years later and I've decided to put my toe back in the waters. In the last two days I've purchased 2 MS65 dollars (PCGS slabbed) and have plans to purchase 2 more shortly, but I have questions.
1) What has been the general price trend of the
Morgan dollar series over the past 25 years. The prices seem pretty reasonable compared to what I remember considering the amount of time that has passed. Did it slowly grow over that period, plateau, or were there spikes?
2) I'm attracted to dollars with colorful toning. I know this isn't everyone's "cup of tea," but that's what I'm planning on acquiring. Looking on
ebay, I'm surprised at the number of MS65 slabbed dollars with colorful toning that are available. Is there a reason why if there's a toned dollar that only has one side toned 80% of the time it's the obverse? That seems suspicious to me, but I'm buying slabbed coins so if the toning was artificially accelerated I'm assuming it would be noted on the slab.
3) Back in the day, when I was actively collecting, I used to get the Les and Sue Fox silver dollar books. Is there anything similar that's out today? I'm not really interested in collecting
VAM varieties.
Appreciate any help/response
