I'm always trolling for uncirculated 1934-S Peace dollars and I believe I've found the ugliest one there is. It looks like someone placed it on an abandoned honeycomb in a toppled beehive for a couple of years... somewhere the humidity was 90% +.

But, I looked it up on the NGC site and found a much different tarnish pattern, so far as intensity, when this coin was processed.

NGC photo:

I suspect someone deliberately tried to AT this coin to cover up the pattern. And failed miserably.

What is your opinion? The slabbing isn't that old... 3261504-001

Thanks,
Adam

If it's AT the damage is done, if this was natural then perhaps a dip would be in order. Granted Peace dollars are notoriously difficult at toning well and being attractive unlike Morgan's.

I wouldn't either. The dramatic change in toning from when it was slabbed to current state is a real problem. What the heck?

Plus it's uglier than sin in the front pew on Sunday.

Any kind of solution that would strip that kind of tarnish would leave pot marks in my opinion. I wouldn't even try it.

Two different pictures taken with
Two different cameras with
Two different lighting set ups by
Two different photographers
Too many variables
My bet is the coin does not look like either picture.

Well it sold for $2200! People are either crazy or have way too much money. That's just crazy for such an ugly coin.

I'd call that bet and say it looks like the most recent photo presently.
