This one is very attractive imho. Opinions on grade? I have some doubts about the surfaces. Has this been cleaned? Thanks!

I have one of these tiny coins from 1862 also. I would give yours a VF 30 grade.

My grade would be VF-20. The has a fair amount of detail, but there is nothing exciting about it.

Strictly for technical grade, it makes VF-25. I can see from the light parallel scratches on the reverse why you would ask if it were cleaned.

More than likely, those minute fine scratches are from the finger rubbing against the coin to make it more visible. Could have happened yesterday, or a long time ago.

Maybe even VF-30. Not a lot of pizzaz, maybe, but enough hair, clasp and Liberty detail are there for a good mid-VF grade to me.

all the veins are there on this high point leaves and the shield is complete all around. the obverse is a little weak in strike. I does appear that there are a lot of hairlines underneath that toning which is not natural. my take in it is that this coin was cleaned and then someone dirtied it up and wiped it off with a cloth to hide the cleaning. in my opinion the coins is XF45 details.

I would grade it VF35 but agree with Panzaldi that it was abrasively cleaned and has been given a cover-up job.

Not that I would ever do this, or know anyone who would have done, but some used straight 30 weight motor oil and a few minutes in an oven and you might see something like this come out after you wipe it off.
