The 1971-D contained no silver. Take a gander at the US coin facts link on the left side of this forum.

90% halves were 1964 and earlier, 40% halves went from 1965 to 1970. The 1970 coins were either in mint sets of proof sets, as they weren't issued for general circulation

90% halves 1964; 40% halves 1965-1970 and some S mint bicentennials. There have been 1971 and 1977 found struck on 40% silver planchets (and 90% 1965) but you shouldn't see the cladding on the rim.

Cladding can be visible on 40% silver half dollars. They are still a clad coin after all. However, there is less contrast between the 80% silver-20% copper cladding and the 79.1% copper-20.9% silver core as there would be with a pure copper core. If you are not looking for it, you will probably not see it.

If I am reading it right ..
Silverfranklin posted that his 1971 Kennedy has copper on the rim.

Sound like he has a normal 1971 clad Kennedy.

As posted ... 1970 was the last for normal 40% kennedy's.
The exception ... are coins from special bicentennial sets
and coins that might have been made on wrong planchets.

I missed a word there, Jbuck. Shouldn't see copper cladding on the rim! The silver layers are distinguishable, but as you said, it's not nearly as big of a difference as what's visible in copper nickel clad.
