Shouldn't the 5 just to the left of Honest Abe be blue not grey (as shown in the photo below)? I'm not really familiar with North African notes.

Sorry this is the only picture I have as I'm only considering a bid.

Yes, the 5 should be blue. I would hesitate before bidding on this, unless it was only 6 bucks or so.

Yeah I was searching in the archives and came across this thread that discusses altered notes.

The "5" on the left should be gray, not blue on $5 United States Note also called Legal Tender.

The yellow on the OP's note should be red. Appears to be faded or chemically altered.

The note should look like this;

Don't bid on that note as a North African note. The $5 North African notes are Silver Certificates, not Legal Tenders.

Thanks Steve for the comparison!

I'm going to sent an email to the auctioneer of the note in the opening post letting them know that what they are selling isn't a North African note as they have it listed.
Rest in Peace

Great comparison, SteveInTampa. It's so much easier to access when you have great pictures.

Yes, a common chemical alteration, sometimes called a "false error".

Well the auction was on Friday night. I had sent an email to the auctioneer and they announced it as a "vintage $5 note." Some younger guy won the bid for $65. Another bidder told him that the note had been altered but the winning bidder refused to believe it.

He should have believed it. This is a common fraudulent alteration, sucker bait for novice PM collectors, been around for decades. He just threw his money away.

Yeah the guy was roughly the same age as me. Sad. I hope that once he figures it out he will still continue to collect.

These show up on ebay frequently with devious descriptions.

Well, I say the guy who bid on it got what he deserved for not listening to the other bidders.

Also, there's no instance where the BEP ever used yellow ink on serial numbers.
