Where is the best places to hunt for half dollar coin rolls in Salt Lake City, Utah? Any suggestions?
I'm new to coin collecting and my daughter is into it also. I want to give her a great memory of our first coin rolls hunt.
Rest in Peace

A phone call to the banks in your area will probably narrow down which ones will take a moment and speak with you, which is a step in the right direction.

Specifically asking for a type of roll will let them tell you how they stock those rolls, too.

I'm quoting my reply to your other post.

Angela, the best thing to do is call around and ask. When I first started CRHing halves, I made a list of banks close to me and spent maybe half an hour calling them. Some only had a few, but if it's convenient, go grab them because you'll occasionally find a silver in there. One bank that I don't have an account with was willing to order me two boxes. Some credit unions would only order if you're a member. I've had my bank order me a number of boxes before I got tired of constantly being skunked and switched denominations.

If you're trying to get a child interested, I would recommend not starting with halves. I went through four boxes of halves ($2,000) and found nothing on my first attempt. I'm not sure how old your daughter is, but if she's going to lose interest quickly, I'd suggest something else, unless you're able/willing to buy junk silver from a coin dealer and salt the rolls. Do not believe the videos on YouTube.

To get a child started coin collecting, I'd recommend cents. You've got many designs and interesting things to look for: wheats (1909-1958), memorial cents (1959-2008), Lincoln bicentennial (four designs in 2009), and shield cents (2010-present). You can go to Hobby Lobby and buy a Lincoln Cent folder for a few bucks and get your daughter started on that. Be sure to grab the 40% coupon from their website when you make a purchase though.

But just look a a dealer's pile of used folders. A decent Dansco can be found for $8, and classic blue Whitman folders for 50 cents.

I agree. Starting off with a used folder or album is a good way to go.

I'd definitely start with either Nickels or Cents... Typically, if you go through about 5 boxes of nickels, you'll likely find 3-5 War Nickels, and 1-2 Buffalos along with around 100 pre-1960 coins. Also, you have some cool modern coins to look for such as the 1990-D "No FG" and the low mintage 2009-P and 2009-D coins. And since you're not too far from Denver, I guess your chances of finding a 1950-D or 1939-D Nickel would be a little better than for most of us. With cents, the wheat cents are what you'll likely most want to look for... In a box, you'll typically find around 10-12... Customer rolls are usually hit or miss, but you will occasionally find "collection dumps" in both of these denominations if you're persistent enough.

And used folders are the way to go... I sometimes can get them free from my dealer... just wish I could get the "additional pages" for Danscos cheaply.
CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!
