I want to start a coin collection for a loved one that is one coin of each U.S. coin (penny, nickel, dime, and quarter, dollar and half dollar) of every member of our family's birth year. I've started collecting pennies, but does anyone have any suggestions as to where to start looking for certain coins?

Will you be searching for circulated coins in pocket change? Mint sets from 1999 and beyond contain multiple quarter and dollar coins. Are the years prior to that?

If you can give us an idea of the dates you are looking for, it would help us offer some options. I collect all US coins by date, rather than series, so I've had some experience in finding coins that way.

I love this topic! I enjoy building sets with significance to family births and life events. Mint or proof sets are certainly excellent. Depending on how far back you want to go, you might even be able to work in interesting issues like commemoratives and other NIC coins. As the others have said, having the years you need would be most helpful.

Seeing how you're unable to use the PM function, why don't you give a list of dates. Members here are more than eager to help. I've got your nickels covered, unless I'm violating some rule.

I have pennies for each year I am looking for except a 1958 penny. I need all coins from the following years except for the pennies (I've got all the pennies for those years) 1958 1967 1982 1983 1984 1988 1998 2003 2005 2006 I need doubles for this year because we have two family members born that year 2007 2016 this one is the easiest for sure.

I would be looking for circulated as well as proofs. I just want to make the complete collection. I forgot that I need another date for my collection which is year 1988 of all coins except for the penny.

Most decent coin shops will have mint sets (sealed uncirculated coins). You can break them out of the wrappers and put them into a holder like the Capital holders or leave them sealed in the set. If you are doing circulated coins from change and/or rolls, most of those dates are fairly easy to find. The 1967 maybe a little harder and the 1958 not easy because most of the silver coins are already pulled from circulation.

I agree the 1958 is going to be a Hard One to Find in Circulation.

Go to the bank and buy 50 bucks in cents you'll more than likely find your 1958. They are incredibly common. If you search through each denomination like that I'd bet that you will find all of the years. It will also be for face so way less then you will pay buying them.

I pulled two 1958 D cents from my last box. Mint marks will open up a whole new can of worms. And you've found no pennies because those are British. I do believe you've found cents though.
I echo the sentiment that 1958 from circulation will be difficult. I'd guess $10,000+ in halves before you find a Franklin, and it might not even be the right year.

I have five rolls of silver Roosevelts that are probably headed for the oven. I just opened one of them and found this 1958 Roosevelt. I'll look at the other four rolls tomorrow for something in better shape. Is this the quality that your looking for?

I am in agreement that the best way to get coins for those years would be to buy proof sets.
