Inspired by Spence's 313th Post Giveaway, and with a big HT (Hat Tip) to spruett001, here is my 500th post contest! Oh, did I mention that this contest is for CCF Supporters only? You're right, I had not mentioned that condition. I left it out of the post's title (subject) hoping that if you are not a CCF Supporter, you would check out this post, and that you would accept my invitation to read the next few paragraphs regarding the CCF Supporter program. Will you devote two minutes to read about why so many CCF members have become CCF Supporters? If your answer to that question was "Yes", then you're still reading this. Yay! Here are the two minutes of enlightenment... The idea for a CCF Supporters Only contest comes from Spence, and I love the way he described and explained it: Quote: While I don't have loads of disposable income, I do believe in spending that money wisely. I spend plenty on coins and coin books—after all, this is my hobby. However, while only being a member of CCF since January of this year, I have also chosen to be a financial supporter. Frankly, with all of the expertise at our fingertips, I can't imagine why anyone *wouldn't* support the folks here at CCF. I should point out that I have no idea who exactly the owners are, although oddly, it seems like lots of folks named Bob or Bobby seem to be in charge. I'm sure that they are nice people and I believe that supporting them will spur them into making CCF even better rather than enabling them to buy another yacht. In fact, putting "my money where my mouth is" is important enough to me that being a CCF supporter it is pretty much the sole criterion for participation in this giveaway.
Here are my rules: 1. You must have that little "supporter" tag on your profile to participate. This is mandatory. Obviously, I'm hoping that some folks who haven't previously been supporters will now ante up a few bucks to help make this site better for everyone, so if you are a new supporter, please make sure that you actually have that tag when you respond. This is mandatory. CCF has made this pretty easy with a little "donate" button on the left side of your screen. Please no whining about how you'd really like to donate but can't because don't have a PayPal account and CCF won't accept your bitcoins. This is mandatory. So, the same conditions apply for this contest. If you are not yet a CCF Supporter, click here to jump right on over to the Donation Page. There are multiple options for chipping in a few bucks to support the site, the most common being $5 a month, or variations on that theme: $25 for 6 months, and $45 for 12 months). You're going to spend that $5 a month investing in your numismatic passion anyway, and don't you get at least five bucks a month worth of actionable knowledge on this forum? Shoot, I figure I have saved at least hundred$ of dollars, and probably more like thousand$, since joining CCF less than one year ago. So don't delay! Join right away! ===> just click here... (opens a new window or tab.)Note: Since it takes a day or two for the admin crew to affix a sporty Supporter Badge below your name, if you become a Supporter today, and also want to post an answer to the Contest Question today, please go ahead and post your answer and just send me a copy of your PayPal email receipt showing you contributed today to become a CCF Supporter (or something similar). {End of two minutes. Can you feel the enlightenment? } CONTEST QUESTIONI mentioned when I joined CCF that my grandfather, born in 1909, introduced me to coin collecting when I was six years old. He gave me my Whitman albums (folders), and gave me a bunch of Lincoln wheat cents, Buffalo nickels, and Mercury dimes to jump start my collection. I loved it! Well that was my maternal grandfather--truly one of my heroes. Although my paternal grandfather was not a coin collector, he was also a really cool grandpa, and another hero for me. If you can guess his birth year correctly you will win a prize! And if you come close, you could win a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th place award! Contest Question: In what year was my paternal grandfather born? IMPLIED PROMISEIf you are skilled at Internet research, you might be able to find the answer online. I couldn't find it in 10 minutes, but if someone kept working at it I suspect one could put pieces of a puzzle together and arrive at the date. Therefore, by entering this contest, you also implicitly promise (declare, state, affirm) that you have not conducted any type of research, inquiry, investigation, or crystal ball reading to discover the answer. Thus, this contest includes an Honor Code, so to speak. Here's the thing about an Honor Code: If you break it, you will either be plagued with heavy corrosive guilt whenever you visit this forum, or you are a sociopath. If you keep your promise, as 99% of you will, you are a man or woman of integrity. Oh, btw, if you conduct online research to find the answer and then share the answer with another member, then both of you have violated the Honor Code, and you're probably both sociopathic. Sorry if that sounds paranoid. My day job is forensic psychology, so I admit to being a bit jaded... PRIZESWow, this has taken longer to write than I thought it would. I want to get this up now so that if there are any questions or suggestions, y'all can post them. I'll be back later today to post the prizes. They won't be big ticket items (I've got two kids in college and another graduates from high school next year!) but they will hopefully be fun. Thank you for reading all this. Best Regards, Mark P.S. Feel free to post your answer now if you wish. Only one answer is allowed. You have 30 minutes to edit an answer. After that, it's permanent. No duplicate answers. The contest ends on 15 February 2017 @ 23:59:59 EST (-5 UTC) {forum time} Edited by dd27 02/08/2017 10:55 am

1906. ? Didn't change my guess, just that Spence's contest got me to become a supporter. I thought about it, know it takes a few bucks to operate a large server sized website, had enjoyed the amount of interaction and learning and decided it was something worthwhile to become a part of. So whoever's enjoying the yacht this month, when do the rest of us get a turn?

Since I have a win in another ongoing contest, I'll have to wait a little while before I guess (I don't have any idea what it is).
Thanks for the hat-tip and the contest! This really is a generous community and it's definitely worth supporting.

Y'all are awesome! Thanks so much for the positive spirit and commitment to CCF. :O) Btw, please feel free to offer suggestions about my contest. And thank you to spruett001 and Spence, and other contest holders, for paving the way and making this easier for me. Here are some of the prizes I've created--I will add a couple more. The winner--the guy or gal who guesses my paternal grandfather's exact birth year, or who is the closest, will choose whichever prize he or she wants; the next closest chooses a prize second, etc. Note that if you win a prize, but you don't want or need it, you may 'bequeath' it to a CCF Supporter of your choice. Just email me his or her postal mailing address, and I'll send the prize to your designated recipient. (I will also happily donate a prize to a Young Numismatist club of your choosing.) CONTEST PRIZES 2014-D Native American dollar, Enhanced Uncirculated - From the 2014 Coin & Currency Set, graded SP-69 by NGC. {See more info about this coin below.} 2016 Currency & Coin Set - Includes the 2016-S Enhanced Uncirculated Native American dollar and a "$1 note containing a low serial number from one of the 12 Federal Reserve Banks". The Coin & Currency Set is still available from the U.S. Mint for $14.95 + shipping (about $5), but you get it for free since this is a prize. {More info about the 2016-S Enhanced Uncirculated N.A. Dollar is below. One Lincoln Wheat cent from each of the coin's first 25 years (1909-1933) - As you might expect, most of the pennies will be from the Philadelphia Mint, but there will be a few from the Denver and San Francisco Mints. The condition (grade) of the cents ranges from G-4 to F-12. If I was wealthy and could give away a 1909-S VDB, 1914-D, 1922 'no D', and 1931-S, I would love to do so. But, unfortunately, I ain't no Uncle Scrooge. ~~~ Here's some more info about the Native American dollars: 2014-D Native American dollar, Enhanced UncirculatedThe 2014-D Native American dollar coin, features Sacagawea on the obverse, and an engraving honoring Native Hospitality on the reverse. Only 50,000 minted. SP-69 or MS-69?Graded at SP-69 by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). This grade is equivalent to MS-69. The SP stands for 'Specimen', which NGC defines as "a hybrid between Mint State and Proof." Enhanced UncirculatedThe United States Mint refers to these coins as Enhanced Uncirculated. The Mint issues the Enhanced Uncirculated Native American dollars as one of the two components in their Coin & Currency Sets. The other component of the set is a $1 bill, which is not part of this prize. As noted above, the US Mint produced a relatively low number of these coins. For example, compare the mintage for this Enhanced Uncirculated 2014-D Native American dollar coin with the general circulation and proof mintages. 2014-P General circulation = 3,080,000 2014-D General circulation = 2,800,000 2014-S Proof = 1,144,154 2014-D Enhanced Uncirculated = 50,000 ReferenceYeoman, R. S., Bressett, K., Bowers, Q. D., & Garrett, J. (Eds.) (2016). A Guidebook of United States coins, Deluxe Edition ('Mega Red'). Atlanta: Whitman Publishing.]
The 2016 Currency & Coin Set is limited to a mintage of 75,000 so there will be a relatively small number of these coins compared to the Native American dollars produced for general circulation (Business Strike), regular Uncirculated Sets, and Proof Sets {1} : Year/Mint Strike Mintage 2016-P Business 2,800,000 2016-D Business 2,100,000 2016-P Uncirculated {2} 267,313 2016-D Uncirculated {3} 282,696 2016-S Proof 683,2724 {4}2016-S Enhanced Uncirculated 46,359 {5}Note: All production figures (mintage) are as of 08 January 2017 as reported on the United States Mint website. Footnotes1. All strikes have the same composition: Manganese-Brass, which consists of 85.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese, and 2% nickel. (Source: United States Mint) 2. Available as part of the 2016 Uncirculated Set (16RJ), which includes one Native American (N.A.) dollar from the Philadelphia Mint and one from the Denver Mint. 3. In addition to the 2016-D N.A. dollars included in the Annual Uncirculated Coin Set (16RJ), the Annual Uncirculated Dollar Coin Set (16RB) also contains 2016-D N.A. dollars, thus the higher mintage for N.A. dollar coins produced by the Denver Mint compared to the Philadelphia Mint. 4. Combined sales figure for sales of 2016 Proof Sets (16RG) and 2016 Silver Proof Sets (16RH). (Although the N.A. Dollar does not contain any silver, it is included in the Silver Proof Set for completeness.) [See Cumulative Sales Figures on the US Mint website.] 5. Over forty-six thousand 2016 Coin & Currency Sets have sold as of 08 Jan 2017, which is why the U.S. Mint still sells them----they will not be available after the Mint reaches the 75,000 sales mark.

Another prize: Fifteen (15) 2017-D Native American Dollars - Business strike, never circulated but purchased as a bag of 100 coins from the U.S. Mint, so the coins have the usual bag marks and such, i.e., they're likely to all be at least MS-63, and mostly MS-65, but unlikely to be MS-69 or MS-70. I buy Native American dollars mainly to give to friends and family members, and to spend (get them into circulation), although I do look at them if I have time, and I'll include some of the nicer ones in this batch of 15 coins. ~ Mark

Quote: Do we get to post a guess once a day? Not as currently defined, but I am open to suggestions that keep the contest fair and fun. ~ Mark P.S. I just realized that if the contest ended today, everyone would win a prize--there are five entries, and six prizes.
