Hi, This is a rather broad question. In general, older and discontinued series will carry a premium over current production series. But within a particular series value is determined by supply and demand with grade and rarity being important factors. Supply and demand isn't always logical however, so a coin from series A that has 1000 known examples remaining might sell for $10,000 and a coin from series B with only 1000 known examples may only be worth a few hundred dollars. Regarding dimes/dimes/halves, 1964 is the last year of 90% silver. Halves were then 40% silver to 1970. Dimes/Quarters from 1965 on and Halves 1971 on are generally copper-nickel unless a special silver issue.

You might find it to be a good idea to go to your local library and check out a copy of A Guidebook of United States coins by R S Yoeman. If your don't have a local library you can pick up a copy that is just a couple years old for $3.50 including shipping from http://www.abebooks.comIgnore the actual prices in the book, but you should be able to see which coins are significantly more valuable. Anif you READ the book you can learn a great deal about US coins (History, grading, mintages etc) It packs a lot of knowledge into a small package at a very low price.

Angel , congratulations you have made the ultimate Newbie of the month award Your question of what years of coins are more valuable depends on what denomination ,variety ,Mint Mark ,series ,grade, etc . and are you talking about U.S. or World coins ?

As far as US coins are concerned, 1793, 1794, 1804, 1815, 1838, 1861, 1877, 1883, 1909, 1916, 1921, 1922, 1945 and 1964 would be my guesses. (Might have missed a few, especially in the 19th century.) IIRC, 1815 is the big one - that is, the hardest year to find if you're trying to get one US coin from every year. 1792 would be harder, but it's somewhat debatable whether any of the 1792 coins count as actual US coinage (as opposed to patterns) anyway. Generically (not limited to US coins), I don't think there's any years that are specifically collected as such more than any others. (Though, IIRC, some WW1 and WW2 dates are key dates across several countries and are thus more likely to be worth more.) The closest I can think of would be the pre-1500 AD dated coins (see the recent Eight Weeks thread over on the Ancients forum).

1964 Dated coins are actual not that valuable at all, except for the 1964 dated Peace dollar (if any still exist). Most 1964 dated coins are only worth their melt value, and 1964 dated quarters, dimes, and half dollars were actually produced for a couple years after 1964.

To totally add to your confusion there are some common date coins in very high grades that are also highly valued as well Welcome to coin collecting. If you are new collecting US coins then a copy of "The Red Book" will be your best friend

If you're talking USA coins, then here are some. Lincoln Pennies All wheat pennies (slight premium) All 1909 pennies, especially 1909 S and S V.D.B 1914 D pennies 1922 plain pennies 1943 pennies that are not steel 1944 pennies that are not copper 1955 pennies (look to see if there is strong doubling on the date) Jefferson Nickels All 1938 and 1939 (relatively low mintage) Coins dated between 1942 and 1945 (35% silver) Not too many key date jeffersons Roosivelt Dimes All dimes dated 1964 and prior (90% silver) Not many key date rosies Washington Quarters All quarters dated 1964 and prior (90% silver) All 1932 quarters, especially 1932 D and 1932 S 1937 S quarters 1976 S (some can be, but are not always, 40% silver) I decided to not do half dollars or dollars, because they are hard to come by anyways. This does not include almost any errors. Post a coin if you think it's an error

Rather a impossible to accurately reply question. However, my experience says that any coin with a BC next to the date would be really, really a valuable coin to save. I keep looking for coins made in the USA before the Pyramids were made. And remember any USA coins made before 1492 are really unusual. In reality to me all coins are valuable.

Please just buy the Red Book of U.S. Coins and do a little homework before asking this sort of question.
