The Mint recently release a $34.95 set including the 2017 circulations coins and two special coins - a GITD toonie and a colourized quarter. It was not clear that these two, especially a glowing $2 coin would be circulated. Wonder no more. They will be according the RCM via Twitter.

I believe this will be the first glow in the dark coin circulated in the world. I also suspect that they will be kept by anyone who is lucky enough to find one.

Seeing as many (too many) of us here are older farts..I can see this "glow in the dark" tWoonie really taking off.

My eyesight's going,.. so this coin and others that should surely follow, will help me get through the night with the added illumination.. Just have to place them in the needed strategic palaces..sink..around the toilet bowl..hallway..staircase..etc..

....and what a bargain also...

I figured they would be circulated once I saw the special 'uncirculated' (now called 'proof like' iirc) set...

DEVLEC... that would be far more expensive than the stickers of stars you can buy at the dollar store...

I don't think they would be circulated. I think the RCM means that some people would buy the set, then either don't want it anymore or someone else breaks it open and spends the coins, then they would end up in circulation.

That might be true of the $34.95 set. A few could find their way into circulation.

But this ad seems to say that these will also be circulating coins so it is totally possible that once released, you could go into a bank and ask for a roll of quarters or Toonies and get a complete roll or some of the roll with these coloured coins.

No doubt about it, yes it will.

This toonie will become a huge hit.

While it might seem odd for Canada to release a Glow-in-the-dark coin at face value, it likely costs far less than $2 to produce. I'm very curious what the mintage will be but whatever that is, I'll bet they'll be scarce.

Special coins like Lucky loonies or special toonies all approaches 5 million in production, this would be probably more, doubt about being rare, but at face why not

Yes, I'd guess 10 million as no other 2017 commemorative $2 will likely be issued and not all 2017 toonies will be gitd. Some will be the plain unpainted design. Maybe we should start a poll? lol! How many night lights for DEVLEC?

Prior mintage of toonie. --

wildflower - I thought there was going to be a commemorative toonie later this year (probably around Remembrance Day) to honor Viny Ridge.

wildflower - Just saw the date on your post. I think the Viny Ridge toonie was announced later.

Sorry.
