Never realized there was that much difference in the two. Engravings differ considerably under magnification. Think I have a couple of those from when I was a kid. Quarters that is, not date specific.

Last Summer I traded a dateless 1916 to a local dealer. I must admit that I had held the coin for years in my "I'll do something with it later collection" of odds and ends. I too read an article on the differences with the 1917 and I still remember the stunned feeling when I was sure that I had a 1916. I, also, traded other nice, although redundant, coins to this dealer and got my ANACS VF20 1916 that is in my set today. The SLQ series is one of my very favorite collections.

There are two more clues: Look at the "two dots then a short line" on the top of liberty head; On 1917 those are very distinctive and complete; on 1916 the "short line" is weak almost missing; Two pairs of dots each side are very weak. The other one is the relative position of the star under "W" of "WE TRUST". On 1917 the star touch the line; on 1916 the star is further below the line. Afernbough: Could we see a pic of your 1916 SLQ? I have not be able to collect one yet. jealous of you!

Hi. related to this, I am curious if the coin displayed here on ebay is a true 1916. I was comparing the diagnostics on the websiites listed above, and everything points to a 1917 to me. The seller swears he can see a "6" on the coin. What are your opinions? http://cgi.ebay.com/1916-RAREST-US-...NR_W0QQitemZ380023380244QQihZ025QQcategoryZ11966QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Certainly from the pics it is not possible to make the judgement. As for all the diagnostics, the coin is so wornI wouldn't trust those either.
