Actually, according to the two websites listed above, there are several diagnostics that can help make a determination even if the coin is very worn. Look at liberty's hair.

johnny: The seller has a very vivid imagination. Compare his outline for the date to the picture above and you'll see that it is too far to the right.

Also, the drapery to the left (facing the obverse) is the incorrect shape.

I believe this seller is just wishful thinking about this coin

Yes, I agree that the coin is not a 1916. None of the diagnostics match IMO. I was the one who initially informed the seller, and they sent me a friendly response, though it is obviously wishful thinking. "John: We appreciate the info, and I did follow the link you provided, which was very helpful, and have passed that along to our bidders. After reviewing the webpage, we are still uncertain one way or the other, the hair appears to be 1916, the shiels appears to be 1917, the foot is unclear, although we will not, I wish we could further clean this coin, to get a better view of certain points, such as down by the feet. Under high magnification, it does appear to shadow 1916, no mint mark. I have a feeling the bidding will not get out of control, as buyers are aware of the questionable date. Thanks again."

It is sad though, the coin that is only worth it's weight in silver is at $66. Someone stands to lose. :-(

I vote 1917 on the ebay auction. Everything looks like a 1917 to me, and it's one of those varieties I've spent hours teaching myself to recognize ( in hopes of finding one and trading it for a rare commem ). As an aside though....it's funny to me that if you place a high grade 1916 and a high grade 1917 type 1 next to each other, the 1917 is always a prettier coin.....
