I picked this one up last night. What do you all say about the grade and how much I SHOULD have paid?

Color in pics is pretty true.

Don't know @ dealers or eww-boy, but have seen that similar grade/years go on other auction sites for anywhere from $24 to upwards of $80. I stopped at $32 the other evening for a '53 @ EF40 (went for $54).

xf-40 and a good price would have been about $30 TO $35 dollars.

EF-40 and not 45 because of minor surface issues. I like the coin, though. By the way, where can I get an Extra Fine for $30-35?

VF35, I am not a fan of the spotty discoloration. Too much wear on hair and leaves for a full XF. It is a cleaned coin that was not fully rinsed, and verdigris has set in where the cleaning agent was not fully removed. I would agree with $30-$40 tops.

Paralyze- that is an interesting observation about the spots. So, does that mean that the residue actually causes the verdigris?

You see that happen when coins are cleaned using certain things (copper polish comes to mind) if it is not fully removed, because it tends to attract and keep substances near the surfaces of the coin that promote corrosion and verdigris (which is the coin's attempt to defend itself.)
