Not sure what to make of this one. A 1976 PL set where the 50 cent piece in it has a plain edge, regular ones have a reeded edge. Weight of the entire set is 39.56 grams. I weighed a regular 1976 PL set and it weighs 39.80 grams. It looks like the blank used was slightly undersized, as it was struck slightly off center. Foreign planchet? Some other issue with the minting process? What do you guys think?

My guess is that it was broadstruck (out of collar); hence the lack of edge reeding.
Nice one!

Shouldn't the weight be the same if that's the case?

At some point you would have to cut it out and weigh it, it has to be a lighter and smaller planchet for it not to have the reeding by the collar, hope it's on a quarter

You're talking about a 0.2 gram difference...not much

A centred broadstrike coin (no collar die) - very nice!! I have a few nickel dollars like that. Although not an eye-popping error, that is easily a $200 error in my opinion.
Very cool, thanks for sharing!!

I have searched thousands of sets and this is the first for me with this type of error. The error set collectors will go nuts for this set and I agree with SPP with a $200.00 value. You just don't know what you find in these sets sometimes!!

Thanks everyone. Truth be told, I wouldn't have noticed it if the previous owned hadn't mentioned it on the envelope :)

Did you pay a premium for it?

Errors in PL sets are quite scarce... well worth the premium in my opinion...

Has anyone found any other errors in PL sets lately? This is still the most interesting one that I have ever come across inside a set. I haven't found any more since posting this months ago. BTW I have just listed this piece in my ebay store, in case anyone is interested :) Feel free to submit an offer!
