The placement is normal since the mintmarks are added to the working die by hand be the toolmaker. Since there are many working dies, the placements for the mintmark will vary die-to-die. In some years, the mintmark gets very close to the date...for others farther away. If the toolmaker strikes the punch used for making the mintmark more than once and the punch isn't perfectly aligned with the first strike, you'll get a mismatch. We call them RPMs. For coins dated before 1990, the mintmarks were hand punched and could contribute to the RPM varieties we hunt. 1990 onward, the mintmark was part of the design.

Look closely at your 1956D; you might find an RPM.

Hey Misairo, that's actually normal for back then. In those days the MM was placed (punched) by hand into the working dies, they moved around. Sometimes when the diemakers tried to correct a really offset punch, they would punch it again, this is what caused the doubled mintmarks referee to as RPM's. I'm not real sure, but you may have an RPM here. I see something inside the "D", looks like the outside curve of a second MM. need closeups to tell for sure. You can check out http://www.coppercoins.com about these.

BTW thinking it maybe a 1956D-1MM-005?

Darn, rackster...you type faster!
