I bought this coin as a gift for a history buff. Does the description (below) seem accurate? I paid $17 for it - seem fair? Thank you!

Menander-Square-Copper-Coin-Indo-Greek-/-Greco-Bactrian-?

Menander-Square-Copper-Coin-Indo-Greek-/-Greco-Bactrian-?

It is described as:

Quote:
Bactria
Menander
160-145 BC
Æ Square Chalkon
O. Elephant head rt.
R. Club
Mitchener 240a

It measures about 15mm X 15mm. I don't have a scale to weigh it.

As background, I read an article on Wikipedia, Indo-Greek Kingdom, and looked at some coins on the Classical Numismatic Group website, such as: KINGS of BAKTRIA. Menander I. Circa 165/155-130 BC. Æ Unit (19x17mm, 11.15 g, 12h), which seems similar, although in much better condition.

I appreciate your insights. :O)

Very cool! I love Menander; most quoted in my college Greek lessons.

This is closer to yours than the CNG example you linked to (which had the whole elephant, rather than just the head):
