All,

I purchased a Dansco Statehood Quarter Album (P and D series) and wanted to know how it compares to the Lighthouse Statehood Quarter albums.

I sort of like the look of the "blue" lighthouse albums a litter better then the brown Dansco album (I think the blue shows the "silver quarters" better) and I like that they use a 3-ring binder (which is much easier to deal with if I want to add/remove pages then the screw-post Dansco binders.

But any other pros/cons?

Do the Lighthouse albums use the same mechanism for the "slide-in plastic sheets" that cover the front and back of the coins?

Any other pros/cons?

I plan to do several more albums over the coming years, and would like to stick with one type of album.

From the forums, seems most people are partial to the Danscos, but to be honest, in using them so far, I'm not that impressed.

Adding pages using the screw-post pages is a pain, and they seem to collect lots of "lint" and "dust" in the coin windows. And also, it seems that it is easy to to push a coin either "too far in" or "not far enough", which can result in it getting "scratched" when sliding in the plastic covers.

Just interested in viewpoints..

Any other options for a State Quarter album (and soon to be also an ATB album and probably a Presidential dollar album).

Thanks.

Michael

You might want to check out Whitman Classic Albums. The slides are easily to get to since the pages have slots at the edges to grab the slides by. Yet too, they also require you to unscrew things to get the pages out if you wanted to remove them. They are dark blue so they show up Silver coins better than Dansco. Most do NOT have empty slots on the last pages like most Dansco Albums have. By this I mean there are usually empty slots on the last pages of most Dansco Albums as if the company just couldn't figure out how many coins were needed.
Many people brag about the Dansco Albums looking so rich like a Leather bound book but then just hide them away.
You may want to just go to Google and type in Coin Albums. Lots more to choose from.

I also looked at the Lighthouse VISTA albums, which look really nice. Here is a link:

http://www.lighthouse.us/epages/lig...ts/STATEHOOD

It is $30 for a 4-ring binder system with a slipcover.. and its a very nice rich blue look.

The other "set-up" I found is by Eagle. Here is the link:

http://www.eaglecoinholders.com/new...ducts_id=119

They have an album where it looks like you can keep all your coins in 2x2 holders, which can make it very easy to update the albums. But is is EXPENSIVE at $99, and that doesn't even cover the slip-case. Hard to justify that kind of money for an album. I could probably just put 2x2 flip pages in a 3-ring binder for a fraction of that cost.

Thoughts on any of these as well?

Regards,

Michael

The Lighthouse albums are very good. I also think that Silver Coins look
better in a blue album.

All of the coin albums have pros and cons. I like Dansco the best of the ones I own and use (Whitman and Littleton). That said, I've looked at Lighthouse albums from time to time, but admittedly have never owned one. Again, there's pros and cons from what I see. Trying to keep an inventory of the encap holder things could be challenging. Size might be a concern for some. I do think Lighthouse albums provide a secure environment for your coins.

Another factor about coin supplies is where they are made. If you want to stay with made in the USA, Whitman is made in China. Dansco is made in the USA. Not sure where all the others are made. One more thing to think about. If a slide is damaged, can you get replacements? Try asking the manufacturers or coin supply places. So far all I've heard from Dansco people are you should go to a hobby store and buy plastic pages and cut your own. Although Whitman does not list those in their catalog, I called them some time ago and requested some plastic slides and I was sent a pile of those free. One more thing to think about is the size of any shelf your putting your Albums on. I have problems with Dansco being to high.

Thanks all.. I'm going to get a few different coin albums and check them out.

I have a few "Dansco" albums already, and here are my comments as a "newbie" using them..

Pros:
Good size, compact, lay "flat" when closed, look nice, good selection of albums/pages, hold coins securely once they are inserted, protect coins fully once they are inserted, have available "slipcases" with silverguard, nice way to display my collection, fairly economical (although not "cheap" if you add in a slipcase and possible an extra page or two).

Cons:
"Brown" color doesn't really seem to show silver coins as nicely as a "blue" or "green" pages used by some other albums, brown seems as if it would be a bad color choice for a penny album (or any brown colored coin), very hard to slide open the plastic covers.. no idea why they didn't put a "cut-out" on the pages to make grabbing the slides easier.. pure stupidity on part of the manufacturer, they seem to collect a lot of "lint, hair, and dust" both inside and on top of the coin holders - I have tried using an "air bulb" to blow them out, but still not great, adding additional pages with the screw-posts is a pain, worried about how many times you can take a coin "in and out" of the album before the coin slots become deformed - they are just cardboard pages!, slides can potentially scratch coins if coins are not seated "perfectly" in the album, still must push coins fairly forcefully into the album - some risk of damage (I am wearing white cotton gloves to try to limit damage), no easy way to "modify" the album by adding in a few extra pages that hold "slabbed coins", if I want to have a few "key dates" coins for my collection stay in their "slabs".

I have a "lighthouse" album on order, and am looking at getting a few others to try as well, so will post my comments when I get those as well.

Regards,

Michael

While these shortcomings do not affect me, they are worthy of mention.

I look at my Dansco albums as a permanent home for my coins. To get the slides out I just press down over an empty hole and slide enough to get the edge out. I do not upgrade or have any reason to remove the coins, so I do not worry about getting a slide out again once all the holes under it are filled (although I can with some patience).

I will most certainly crack a slab to fill a hole in the album, but know that these would not be high-value MS coins.
