didn't take time to upload pics yet in case this is common. I found a 1969 penny with no d mark or initials?

As usual, pictures will help so we're not here guessing what you might or might not have. By no D, I'm guessing you mean no mint mark? In that case it's not unusual at all -- there were 1,136,910,000 cents minted at Philadelphia in 1969; these bear no mint mark. I'm not sure what you mean by no initials -- no FG? Then you likely have a Grease Filled Die, or a coin minted where the initials were polished off. Pictures!

I know the no mint mark means Philadelphia, I was curious as to the missing fg, because when I researched missing initials they all said 1969d. I was thinking is it possible to have an error where it is a d but not present and also the initials. I believe you are correct about the grease or polished Druu I looked again with less magnification, and I see the fg now, sorry if I wasted your time.

Not a waste of time, it's just difficult to give you accurate information. You probably know more about the missing FG cents than I do, since I haven't actually researched it. I just recall hearing in passing here that some of the TPGs used to list the no FG variety on holders, but have since stopped doing it. I'm only familiar with the no FG JFK halves, which they still attribute on slabs.

I use a digital microscope, a cheap one. Do you have any advice on using something else? I find myself questioning what I am seeing due to the large amounts of magnification?

I only use a handheld magnifying glass. I do wish I had a USB microscope to get closer to the details at times though. I'd recommend less magnification at first, then switching to your microscope to confirm errors and varieties. Here's a recent thread on what equipment some people use: http://goccf.com/t/279012

If the FG initials are weak, could be grease filled. If the Memorial roof is floating as well, then possibly heavy die polishing wiped them out. Common for this year as well as 1970. I believe more than one reverse die was over polished. Thanks, Doug.
