Hello all. I'm a newbie to the hobby and this forum. I received this from the cashier at a liquor store the other day and was wondering if it's worth more than 5c. Thx.

Looks like MD on the face that was damaged after the strike. Welcome to the forum. I'm using a phone and can't access the emoticons.

Coop I can't run on but one track at a time. Mike Diamond said, "I do not consider it "damage" but a legitimate striking error. Just because the doubling occurs after the hammer die reaches the lowest point of its downstroke doesn't mean it's not related to the strike." I take that to mean during the strike, and a mint error. Which am I supposed to believe?

That is what I'm saying, it is after the lowest part of the die stroke when the die separates, it makes the mark on the coin. (I prefer damage, because to me that area is altered)

I am going to have to respectfully disagree Coop. I have to agree with Mike. It's not damage, but a legitimate striking error. After the lowest part of the downstroke, the die is still moving erratically and in contact with the edges of the relief it just created and then separates. As long as it's a mint error, we should not call it damage because damage occurs post strike. It is Strike Doubling.

However, there should be a cutoff somewhere. I've seen MD explained as either Machine Damage or Machine Doubling. I prefer the latter. I think that any part of the strike that causes abnormalities should be considered errors (including what happens beyond the full downstroke). While in complete control of the mint under normally operating mint conditions, it happened and doesn't represent what it is intended to look like.

Even Die Deterioration (and previously, mintmark punch deterioration/damage) can be included because it is something that the mint is in control of and decided to be lax about. How is Die Deterioration different from die cracks, chips, Cuds, etc.? It's all wear/deterioration/overuse.

The only common thing in this area I wouldn't include is bag marks because they are indistinguishable from marks that came post-mint possession.

But, it doesn't mean much beyond trying to clarify a term because this doubling/damage is not sought after and some types of damage/errors occur a lot more frequently than others. I guess that's the real test: Rarity.
