I read that the mintmarks were punched by hand before 1990. I spotted this 78-D LMC and wondered if it would be considered a variety and if it was worth saving. Opinions?

I'm with John1. If you can find a '78-d that's not filled, that'd be a good one.
Rest in Peace

No premium on these. Called a "button" mintmark because inside filled, not many RPM' for 78. Same way on 1979D's but they're a couple RPM to be found, even the cooler one. The lower corner has a chip in a pronounced "v" shape that many thought was an RPM, but isn't. That's a freebie, BTW!

Many hand punched mint marks are "tilted".

Usually the term tilted refers to the punching of the mint mark that leaves a RPM on one or both mint mark serifs. (That is not the case on your coin) Yours has the mint mark rotated. I've seen some angled as much as 12 degrees:

But these are not RPMs. They are angled mint marks. Yours is like that, just not as much angled.
