Hardly a gold expert, but I'll say genuine, AU-58, with an obverse that appears abraded.

AU details, cleaned (hairlined on both sides) -- cannot tell authenticity over the Internet with these pictures unless there is something glaringly obvious such as blundered details or noticeable tool marks. The gold experts will have to contribute further, as this is hardly my strong suit.

Value should be between 300-350 for a *non-cleaned* AU example.

It looks fine to me. If the weight and diameter are good then you shouldn't have a concern. Does look AU+ with a possible cleaning.

$2.50 and other small gold have a known problem of a lot of fake coins.

Many coin shops will have testers to check the fineness of the gold.
They will also check the weight.

If those check out, there are guides that will show known fakes to check
for die markers of fake coins.

Even after making all those checks, some still turn out to be fake.

Your pictures .. for me ... are not good enough to give a opinion on if the coin
is authentic.

This coin could be worth anywhere from melt to the $300 range.

For it to trade in the higher range, it should be sent in to be graded and
authenticated.
By that I mean sent into PCGS, NGC or ANACS. And then it would have
to get at least a AU problem free grade to make it worth spending the money
for grading and shipping costs. That is assuming the coin was purchased right.

Agree need better pics. At first glance the scratches across the obverse face indicate a wiping or cleaning at sometime. Basically will we get more detailed photos it can be anywhere from au58-ms62 to AU/unc details. This makes a huge difference in price.
