I believe this to be a NSF variety. After consulting my Charlton I am still not sure if its the large or small date. Also does the coin look legit?

I'm no expert but I think this is a NSF small date, due to the spacing between the hoof and 3

I agree, small date. How I tell the difference - along the left side of the "5", with the small date, the vertical bar and the blank gap are almost equal. In the large date, the blank gap is much larger than the vertical bar.

It looks every bit a legit 50c to me!

NSF small date
I look at the rims, small date has wire rims similar to Geo.VI coins, large date has wider rims.

Another marker I noticed a number of years ago but have never seen mentioned elsewhere.
On the small date the vertical centerline of the Maltese cross at the top of crown nearly points at a denticle.
On the large date reverse the centerline of the Maltese cross points squarely between two denticles.

That is an easy way!

So I found this large date and the difference is clear using that method. Learned something new!

Though the difference is obvious to me simply by looking at the rims I think the denticle alignment marker is easier to use for those who haven't yet or are unlikely to spend a lot of time cherry picking.
I have many other markers I use for varieties which I haven't seen mentioned anywhere.
I'll try to share as we go along.
